There are topics that last for years in typical circles always being brought up and cycled through a filtered viewpoint. Be it political or philosophical, new perspectives exist but so often the same views get expressed. In the field of modern media or industry of aesthetics, how we as a society consider something means a lot to people. Why particularly? That might be a far more interesting topic. But I am touching upon the why of, why is there a video games as art debate at all? Mainly I came to concern myself with a thought of, why is it framed the way it is framed? When talking about paintings as art, it is less focused in our discussion about looking and viewing the painting. It's the artists stroke of her hand upon the canvas. When the filmmaker is called an ar-tist. It is the flair of the camera work, direction, and acting talent of the stars. Not the art of the viewing. Onward it goes, the same for the musician or literary writer. It's the act of creation that makes something art, not the act of engaging with the finished product. Somehow the contrast many draw the line upon in video games being art, such as Robert Ebert's famous retort, latch on to a contrast by the human engagement of "playing" a game rather than simply watching it. However, we can be focused more or less on the game element of these creations and more on the development focus. People in the past have contrasted these views by focusing on how games such as chess are art. That has a point, I happen to think it is limited. Artists create games the same way they create anything aesthetic. Through craft and dedication, it just gets engaged with on a different level. Programmers craft functions, story designers create worlds and characters, 3D models are made with artistic intent and combined all together these pieces of art make a larger art form. Video games are an art form the same way films are, as a collaboration and connection between mixing multiple art-forms for a hopefully captivated audience, or for the simply love of expression. I stand by this view of the debate, but I wonder why it is less what is focused on. If someone out there understood it I would be interested to know, whether agreeing with my view or not. To create, is to create art, so people out in the world. Keep Creating, Mark DRAMA & SEZA, Black Vomit, All Rights Reserved
